Masking is often confused with people pleasing, but masking goes deeper — especially when it comes to ADHD masking, autism masking, and neurodivergent masking. While people pleasing is usually about keeping others happy, avoiding conflict, or trying to be liked, masking is the process of hiding your real thoughts, reactions, needs, personality, autism traits, ADHD traits, or neurodivergent traits in order to feel safe, accepted, or “normal.” In this video, I break down masking vs. people pleasing, the signs of masking, the signs of ADHD masking, the signs of autism masking, and why so many people don’t realize they are masking until they feel exhausted, disconnected, anxious, or completely burned out. You’ll learn how masking shows up in autism, ADHD, trauma, anxiety, and emotionally unsafe relationships, and why autism masking and ADHD masking can look like being “high functioning,” easygoing, social, agreeable, or put together on the outside while feeling overwhelmed on the inside. If you’ve ever wondered whether you are people pleasing, masking your ADHD, masking your autism, hiding neurodivergent traits, or losing yourself to keep other people comfortable, this conversation will help you understand the difference between people pleasing and masking, how masking impacts mental health, and how to start recognizing the parts of yourself you may have been hiding.
