What every ancient culture knew about the world that we don't | Eckhart Tolle
The world is not a machine. It only feels that way, and that feeling was handed to you. Eckhart Tolle traces how it happened. Ancient cultures everywhere, in Europe, in Africa, in Australia, perceived the world as animated. Everything held a spirit presence. They may have described it in ways we would now question, but they could sense the world as alive, and themselves as alive within it. Then materialism took hold in the nineteenth century. Life became a random process with no meaning or purpose behind it. Molecules colliding, the fittest surviving. You did not have to read a word of it for the idea to seep into the collective mind. The world quietly became dead. Physicists eventually said something different. That the universe looks less like a machine and more like a mind. That what we perceive as solid matter is a very limited picture of what is actually there. Everything is alive with presence, and that presence is consciousness in different vibrational frequencies. Then there is the question of intelligence. Put a monkey at a keyboard for five billion years and you will not get Hamlet. The ancient Greeks had a word for the organizing intelligence behind everything, the logos. The Gospel of John opens with it. In the beginning was the logos, usually translated as the word, though its deeper meaning is the intelligence behind all appearances. The Romans spoke of the anima mundi, the soul of the world. One thing is needed to sense any of this for yourself. Stillness. Be alert and quiet enough, and the aliveness of everything around you becomes something you feel rather than something you believe. Eckhart goes much further into this in the full session.
