I think you'll enjoy this one. It's arguably the tip-toppest Carnacki because you get a sense of some of the other characters, in this case in the Captain's house. Carnacki is summoned there by telegram because there are some (red?) rum goings on (natch). In a way, to avid Sherlock Holmes fans, this tale is not a million miles distant from the legends of the Grimpen Mire and Baskerville Hall. However there is no-one prancing around with a butterfly net in this one nor some massive slobber-chops of a pooch mooching around beyond the ha-ha. That being said, the animal lovers who listen to these stories will be pleased to hear that no critters come to any harm and there's hardly a person who doesn't get what they deserve (in the true tradition of Victorian and Edwardian literature - generally speaking! - and it's Miss Prism who offers the best definition of 'the good ending ? happily and the bad unhappily' in fiction. Who would wish it otherwise? I enjoyed this muchly, especially as it allowed me to bung in multiple meaningful / dramatic pauses! Anyway, thank you for listening to the words and the gaps and, a further word to the wise, there are two more Carnacki's coming up and then that's the Carnacki well run dry and we drive the caravan onward, seeking out more promising seams in the fiction mine of yesteryear.
