Doug's Dharma

Doug's Dharma is devoted to the teachings of early Buddhism, read from a contemporary and openly secular vantage point. Its raw material is the earliest layer of the tradition's texts, and one question runs through everything: what in all of that can actually be used today, in an ordinary life, without requiring religious commitment up front. The channel draws on its author's academic training in philosophy and Buddhist studies alongside many years of practice in the Zen and Theravāda traditions, and that double origin shows in the work: close attention to the texts and their setting, but also to what practice does to the person who sustains it. The videos take up substantive doctrinal questions ( what nirvana actually is, how the chain of suffering works, whether early Buddhism is the 'real' Buddhism, why the Buddha discouraged prayer ) alongside problems the tradition never anticipated but that are now unavoidable: anti-natalism, sustainable living, how we treat machines that talk back. The treatment is not apologetic. Internal disagreements within the tradition are laid out, what a source says is kept separate from what its interpreters say, and the author openly revisits his own past positions: entire videos are given over to what he once got wrong and what changed his mind. Newcomers and long-time readers of the early discourses will both find something here: a large, well-ordered archive rather than a stream of disconnected clips. The voice is calm, unceremonious, free of display mysticism. Meditation is handled with a certain wariness toward purely instrumental use, and ethics occupies the central place it held in the texts themselves. This is a channel for thinking slowly, not for collecting slogans.
