Balade Mentale

Balade Mentale is a French science channel concerned, in its own words, with the universe, with life, and with a little of everything else. Its films range from the origin of life to the disappearance of the seas, from the history of the early Earth to the scenarios in which the cosmos might end, taking in the lava tsunamis of the largest known eruptions, the islands forbidden to humans, and what actually awaits the first astronauts to set foot on Mars. What sets the channel apart is its form. Each piece is built as a walk: an unhurried narrating voice, images treated with care, and a pace that lets an idea settle before the next one arrives. Scale is its favourite material ( the size of the universe, the depth of geological time, the distance between the microbial and the cosmic ) and it works that material so the viewer feels it rather than merely follows it. Series such as "Les mondes du dessous", "La transformation du monde" and "Le monde sous la dent" gather this approach into thematic sets that can be watched on their own or in sequence. Not everything looks skyward. There are films on artificial intelligence ( both on what it may help discover and on what does not sit right about it ) on microbes and decay, on historical schemes for signalling to possible civilisations elsewhere. What a newcomer finds here is science made to be watched whole and without noise: long pieces, free of stridency, that treat the viewer as someone able to follow an argument to its end and to sit for a while with what they have seen.
