Eckhart Tolle's answer to someone who has tried everything
What do you do when an urge is stronger than you are? Someone at a retreat puts that to Eckhart Tolle. He says he feels like a pretender when it comes to presence. He looks around a room of people sitting quietly and assumes it comes naturally to everyone but him. He meditates. He has tried demanding practices. And still, most afternoons, a pull arrives and he follows it before he has decided anything. Eckhart does not tell him to try harder. He asks about the compulsion itself, and then offers an experiment. Suppression will not work, at least not for long. So when you feel the pull begin, introduce a delay. Five minutes. Ten. You may not be able to stop it, and stopping it is not the point. In that gap, turn your attention to the pull itself. Not thinking about it, not arguing with it, simply feeling what that energy is like in the body. Ah, you say. There it is again. Something shifts in that small move. The pull stops being something that happens to you and becomes something you are conscious of while it happens. And whatever works for one compulsion works for the rest, because underneath they all run the same way. Presence is not something you force. It is what appears when you stop fighting yourself long enough to look. Eckhart goes much further into this in the full session.
