N.B. Remember this is Part One. Part Two in the can and coming shortly. The nights are drawing in where I am, and having recorded all the Sherlock Holmes tales I ask myself who is the next best detective loitering under a lamppost, in the public domain? Well, according to none other than George Orwell, although Conan Doyle takes the number one spot on the medal podium, silver and bronze are taken by R Austin Freeman for his Dr. Thorndyke stories and Bramah's blind detective Max Carrados. Well, here, after a bit of a gap, is a selection from Freeman of his Thorndyke tales. You'll notice, if you haven't done so before, that the structure and approach is very different to Doyle and is really rather revolutionary. This story was written in 1910.
