You notice a beautiful tree. Within seconds, the mind is at work. What kind is it. Wasn't there one like this somewhere last year. And now you do not even need to wonder, because you can photograph it and an app will tell you the name. Eckhart Tolle admits he has that app himself, and finds it useful. The problem is not the name. It is what the naming replaces. There are two ways of knowing. One runs through concepts, labels, and mental commentary, a screen of thought laid over everything you perceive. The other is direct, and it needs no words at all. Both matter, but almost everyone in this civilisation lives entirely in the first one. We have far more concepts than we need. We have made ourselves into a conceptual entity, a narrative called my life. Try the other one. Look at a tree, and be still while you look. You can know it is an olive tree without being trapped in the idea of an olive tree. Let the concept go and simply look. What you begin to sense is not information. It is the aliveness of the thing, its beingness, and then something more, a quality the ancients called sacred, which is why certain trees and certain groves were treated with reverence and why people gathered there. This is the doorway to the deeper knowing the Greeks called gnosis, and it is also where intelligence starts turning into wisdom. Not more facts about the tree. A different relationship with it. Eckhart goes much further into this in the full session.
