Listening sounds simple. Almost nobody does it. While the other person is speaking, most of us are quietly assembling the reply, waiting for the gap. Eckhart Tolle suggests something different. But if you stay connected to the alert stillness underneath your thinking, something else comes through. Empathy. Compassion. What the Dalai Lama simply calls kindness. Asked about his religion, he did not say Buddhism. He said his religion is kindness. And there is something further you can sense in another person. Behind their conditioning is their being, and it is one with yours. That recognition is the end of the delusion of absolute separateness. The other stops being entirely other.
