Before Lombardy became a region of Italy, the Lombards were a roaming warrior people whose origin story mixed myth, migration, politics, and war. This video follows their rise from the legendary “long-beards” of the Winnils to one of the most important Germanic kingdoms of the early Middle Ages. We trace how a small tribal coalition entered Roman records, settled in Pannonia, fought the Heruli and Gepids, and served the Eastern Roman Empire before turning against it. Under King Alboin, the Lombards invaded a devastated Italy in 568, seized Milan and Pavia, and carved out a kingdom among the ruins of Rome. But conquest brought instability: murder, autonomous dukes, Byzantine resistance, religious change, and a society built around warriors, law, honour, and hierarchy. The story then turns to the 8th century, when Lombard expansion threatened Rome itself, forcing the Pope to seek protection from the rising Carolingian Franks. From Alboin’s bloody legend to Pippin’s invasions and the birth of the Papal States, this is the story of how the Lombards reshaped Italy—and why their kingdom could not survive Frankish power. It is a transformation story linking Rome’s collapse, barbarian migration, medieval state-building, and the rise of Charlemagne’s world in medieval Europe.
