Eckhart Tolle begins with a warning. Do not say the words I am God. Not because it is entirely false. Because it is not quite right, and because of how it lands on other people. He offers a better image. Think of a ray of sunlight announcing that it is the sun. There is truth in it. The light on your skin really is the sun, not something separate that the sun posted to you. But the sun itself would end you in an instant, and the light on your arm is pleasant. The scale is not the same, even though the substance is. That is how he describes your relationship to the divine. Consciousness emanates from the source of all life into this world, and it is the essence of you, sensed here and now as your own aliveness. You are not separate from it, in the way a ray is not separate from the sun. You are an extension of it into this dimension, taking a temporary form as a person for a while. He goes further about the source itself. God is beyond comprehension, prior to existence, outside time and space. Not created and finished, either. God is not something that created the world once. God is creating it, continuously, now. Even Stephen Hawking wondered why the universe goes to the trouble of existing at all, and Eckhart is content to leave that question open, because every answer only invites another why.
